Close Call for Nomads

Nomads just edged the closest game of the week when beating Jumbo Jet Set by two pins. Nomads started well and recorded a first leg total of 75 to lead by 11 pins before extending their lead to 16 after leg two. The Jets then started the fight back over the next two legs with Dennis Compton starring, when making two stacks of 14 and 13 on the way to a score of 49 - the league’s top individual score to date. And so going into the final legs Nomads held only a slender one pin advantage. They then scored 60 to leave Jumbo Jets wanting a tricky 62 pins to snatch an unlikely win but they faltered and finally could make only 59. For Nomads, Mac Eaton continued his fine form with 39, with Geof Loat and Alan Cummings making 38 and 37 respectively. Aside from Compton’s brilliant 49, Jumbo Jets had Dave Badsey making 36 and Rich Johnston & Liz Rowberry 35 each.

Elsewhere, Lodge Farmers set the early pace to lead The Borough by 15 pins after leg one. The Borough then recovered over the next three legs by winning each of them to reduce that deficit to six pins. But then their good form deserted them when they could only muster 54 pins in their last leg. It left Farmers wanting only 49 to win which they comfortably made. Best for Lodge Farmers were Frank Morris with 42, with 35 each coming from Paul Cotton, Tim Jones and Glyn Morley. In reply, The Borough had Julian Workman making 37 and Michelle Court (incl 12 stack) & Steve Court 36 each.

In the top v bottom clash there were no surprises as Engineers opened up a 21 lead when winning the first two legs against Bernie’s Bolts. The Bolts did take leg three but were still 18 pins adrift before normal service was resumed as Engineers won each of the remaining two legs comfortably enough. And when left 90 pins to win the game, The Bolts found this well beyond them. For The Bolts, Jess Andrews made 39 (incl 12 stack), Craig McSweeney 33, and 32 each from Paul Blayney and Lewis McSweeney. Mark Ganderton made 37 and Luke Saunders & Joe Kelso 36 each for Engineers.
